ROOFTOP BALCONY
Newtown
The garden of this large penthouse balcony is like stepping into a welcoming resort. Dramatic accent plantings and succulent mixed plantings in large tubular pots compliment the clean uncluttered lines of the new apartment The light is bright and fabulous, and the apartment links seamlessly to the balcony, where the client loves to relax and entertain outside.
The brief included the addition of interesting plants to compliment the exotic feel of the balcony, providing some shade and incorporate the client's favourite colours of purple, turquoise and white wherever possible! Zero maintenance was also requested........
The design included lightweight but sturdy troughs and pots in a silvery grey. In such an exposed position all plantings needed to be tough and appropriate for extreme exposure to sun, wind and rain. A row of mature Dracaena marginata, under-planted with purple Rhoeo in the troughs provided screening from the neighbouring apartment, and two umbrellas (heavily weighted) provided shade. Succulent gardens in pots complete with ground covers such as the purple Tradescantia pallida compliment an accent plant, the giant bromeliad Alcanterea imperialis 'Rubra'. The turquoise balcony pots at the end of the balcony give a sense of enclosure to the balcony.
As for the zero maintenance, we established a watering system where possible. The other plants are drought tolerant and happy with a bi-weekly water!
