EDIBLE

GARDEN

Erskineville

Most of our inner-city clients are keen to include edibles in their garden and for this client the edible bed was the most important part of the design.

The Brief included establishing an edible garden bed, separate spaces for kids play and adult entertaining areas, some outdoor storage space and preserving the dwarf gumtree, Corymbia ficifolia 'Summer Red', which is a significant planting for the family. Inclusions of a hammock swing, trampoline and retractable washing line were also requested.

The design took advantage of this 40m2 open space by using different levels to divide the area. Two long decking steps at the back door encouraged the family outside and doubled as seating space.  Plantings were kept to the boundaries using narrow planting beds and  Australian native climbers such as Pandorea pandorana 'Lady Di'.  A deck at the end of the garden, complete with blackboard, swing and space for the 'temporary' trampoline, became the play area whilst the rest of the space was designed for entertaining and a raised edible garden bed. Beautiful silver travertine pavers were used to compliment the grey painted raised beds.

This family loves to garden and dig around in the edible bed, planting by seed or seedling and watching the edibles grow and ripen ready for eating!  There has been plenty of fun growing sweetcorn, beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, salad greens, Asian greens, Kale, strawberries and herbs such as rosemary, parsley and coriander. I wonder what they will plant next????
